Summer Algebra Institute
One of the programs we have offered for the past few years is Summer Algebra Institute, thanks to a generous grant by the California State University system. In Summer Algebra Institute, known as SAI, 6th to 9th graders get the opportunity to focus on the skills needed for success in pre-Algebra and Algebra.
Summer Algebra Institute, known as SAI, is an intensive, six-week (3 hours a day, 4 days a week) program led by experienced teachers trained in the CSU method to help youth understand the core math skills and techniques they need to excel in Algebra. Earning a high grade in Algebra (a key a-g class needed for college) is the first step on the youth's path to college. Without a solid understanding of algebra, higher math will be more challenging.
The CSU has designed an extremely low-cost but high quality program designed to give middle school youth the extra help they need to ensure high grades in a fall Algebra class.
As part of the program, students will learn about college prep and visit a few college campuses as well. The program requires an attendance commitment from students and parents must attend a mandatory orientation session.
Applications and more information will be available soon for the summer session. This is the ideal program for middle school youth who have struggled with pre-algebra concepts and graduating eighth graders preparing to enter high school algebra for the first time.
If you are interested in this program (which has limited registration), be sure to join our mailing list so you are among the first to find out about the application procedure.
In Long Beach? While the SAI program will not be offered there, we WILL be offering Pre-Algebra/Algebra enrichment classes in Long Beach, along with higher level math classes. Please visit the Long Beach Classes page to see the status of summer enrichment in the area.
