About John H. Wilson, III
John H. Wilson, III is on the staff at the 12,000 to 15,000 member West Angeles Church of God in Christ and serves as the Education and Enrichment Ministry (EEM) Program Director.
With the vision and support of Bishop Charles E. Blake, the Senior Pastor of West Angeles Church, the program expanded from a modest after school math program to one that now serves more than 400 mostly non-member youth from over 45 middle schools and high schools all across the Los Angeles area, from Pasadena to Long Beach. See West Angeles Church for more information on all the programs offered through the Education and Enrichment Ministry Program.
The program under John Wilson's direction has established tutoring, enrichment, and supplemental teaching programs in all subjects beginning with math and applied science both at West Angeles and throughout the community. The college prep program provides guidance to students and parents through every step of the process, and has helped more than 800 youth to affordably attend college where many may not have done so. One of the highly successful programs run at West Angeles for the past few years is the Summer Algebra Institute for 6th through 10th graders, funded by a grant from the CSU. This program was expanded to a Long Beach site for the first time in summer of 2011.
John graduated from George Washington University as a major in Electrical Engineering in May 1980 and moved to California to work for Hughes Aircraft Company and later, Northrop Grumman. He enjoyed a nearly 20-year career as an aerospace engineer, before leaving to work full-time as the Education and Enrichment Ministry Program Director at West Angeles Church. His passion is math and working with youth to fulfill their dreams of college and his program educates parents and students about affordable college options.
In addition to teaching and tutoring math to youth, John has also coached math teachers all across Los Angeles County, served on educational boards throughout the community, and consulted for charter schools desiring successful and strong math programs for youth.
