Summer Enrichment Program at West Angeles

Many youth struggle with math beginning in middle school as concepts and formulas of algebra are being presented earlier and earlier. Math enrichment classes are a key tool to alleviate much of the stress and frustration, as we can teach concepts in small groups enhanced with one-on-one help, as needed. In addition, we offer excellent writing classes for high school students, as well as programs for younger students to cement their foundation for middle school. Our approach is a proven and more affordable alternative than so-called commercial learning centers.

Each summer, West Angeles offers programs to help your middle school or high school student be well prepared for their fall math courses.

We find that youth do better in the fall BY FAR when they see the topics in summer in a fun but structured setting with mature teachers and assistants who have great knowledge and personalities.

Here is the link to download the Summer 2011 Summer Enrichment Program packet info here: Schedule and Registration Form Package. Please note that this year a $25 nonrefundable deposit is required, payable only by mail or in person (see packet). Also, there is a MANDATORY orientation session required for both parents and youth on either Sunday, June 26 at 2:15 pm or Friday, July 1 at 7:30 pm. Please note classes will be limited in size, so it is important to register EARLY.

Here are some other summer 2011 programs to check into:

Academy of Business Leadership - Summer Business Institute (SBI): SBI is a five-to-seven week program that targets mostly high-potential low-opportunity students 10 to 19 years of age from over 146 inner city middle and high schools each year. SBI participants are hosted on the campuses of USC, CSULA, CSUDH, CSUF, UCLA, and LMU. At the end of the program, students receive up to 10 units of high school credit through various school districts. Participants are provided with over 225 hours of instruction by MBA professionals and qualified instructors, and are lectured daily by prominent corporate and civic leaders. In addition, they participate in college preparation workshops, receive 30-40 hours of mentoring from volunteer trainers, read the Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal daily, and participate in weekly field trips to over 21 Fortune 500 corporations where they meet with senior executives in boardrooms and learn about their fields of expertise. Visit Summer Business Institute (SBI) for all the details and an application.

Los Angeles Urban League Summer Business Institute:

UCLA Science Math Achievement and Research Technology for Students (SMARTS):

One of the programs we have offered for the past few years is Summer Algebra Institute, thanks to a generous grant by the California State University system. In Summer Algebra Institute, known as SAI, 6th to 9th graders get the opportunity to focus on the skills needed for success in pre-Algebra and Algebra. Watch for information soon on our West Angeles program and a new site in Long Beach.
